Technical Questions and Answers
I just saw an article in our paper that Honda is recalling 126,000 GL1800s from 2001-10 and 2012 for a problem with the secondary brake master cylinder. The article says that the rear brake can drag, causing a crash or a fire. I ride a 2007 Wing that has been triked out with a Roadsmith trike kit. My question is, since my bike has been triked, should I still have it checked out by my local Honda dealer?

Hi John & Pam,
I don’t have all the details on this yet [See Quick Hits for more info -Ed], but my understanding is that the recall affects the same part that was the subject of the previous brake system recall – namely the proportioning valve. There have been over 500 complaints to NHTSA regarding the issue. The recall states that the rear brake may drag, resulting in a fire or crash, and that the problem is as yet not completely understood. Your trike likely doesn’t use the OEM rear brake caliper, so I doubt your trike is affected. But out of an abundance of caution, I’m advising you to get the answer from a Honda dealership service manager. He’ll have better access than I to those who know.
